canering replied to your post: some girl reblogged my short version summary of Summer of My German Soldier haha omg i remember that book. i actually read it all the way through, out of a sense of misguided duty. i think i was the only one in that class who did. and i hated it.

you felt guilty because it’s a book about the Holocaust. just because a book is about the Holocaust doesn’t mean it’s a good book. i personally think the Diary of Anne Frank is incredibly overrated. i’m sick of being inundated with Holocaust literature. same thing with WWII literature. just because you set your story during the most heinous atrocity committed in the 21st century doesn’t automatically make it good, or poignant, or worth my time. Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close is kind of the same thing. it wasn’t really my favorite book in the world, but because it’s about 9/11 that automatically makes it Important and Worthwhile. not necessarily.
and the reason people hate Summer of my German Soldier is because it’s totally foolish. i absolutely cannot identify with stupid main characters. and that girl was just flat up STUPID. the end.
